The Canadian Mathematical Society Student Committee (CMS Studc) was created in 1999 to help the Society better serve the needs of university students. Our goal is to foster a strong, connected, and active mathematics student community across Canada.
We’re a team of undergraduate and graduate students who organize initiatives for students, by students—ranging from national conferences and publications to online outreach and in-person events.
As a committee of the Canadian Mathematical Society (CMS), we operate under its By-Laws, follow all Standing Policies, and uphold the Society’s Code of Conduct. You can also view our full Terms of Reference for a detailed outline of our mandate, responsibilities, and structure.
Being part of Studc means developing skills in leadership, communication, teamwork, event planning, writing, outreach, and more. Here are some of the key areas we work in:
Notes From the Margin
Are you passionate about writing, editing, or sharing ideas?
We produce Notes from the Margin, a semi-annual publication featuring student-written articles, puzzles, interviews, and more. You’ll find copies in your math department and online. Studc members help with reviewing submissions, design, and editorial decisions—an excellent chance to get a feel for academic publishing behind the scenes.
Canadian Undergraduate Mathematics Conference (CUMC)
Do you like big-picture planning and working with different schools?
Studc helps oversee the bidding process and supports the host university in organizing the CUMC, Canada’s largest undergraduate math conference. This event brings together over 100 students from coast to coast to share their work, network, and have fun.
Website & Social Media
Are you into web design, content creation, or community building?
We manage this website and maintain the CMS Student Discord server—our virtual hub for math chats, memes, event reminders, and connecting with fellow students. We’re always looking to improve how we communicate and support students online.
Regional Conference Funding
Want to have a voice in supporting local math initiatives?
Studc administers Regional Conference Funding, a funding program that helps student groups across Canada host their own regional math events. We review applications and provide support to help turn great ideas into real events.
Events at CMS Meetings
Are you interested in organizing academic and social events?
At the biannual CMS Meetings, we coordinate several student-focused activities. These are a great opportunity to meet peers and professionals, and to see what goes into organizing national events. Typical student sessions include:
Student Development Workshop
Each Meeting, we organize a workshop tailored to student interests—topics vary from research skills to math communication to career development. We select themes, invite speakers, and coordinate all aspects of the event. Past workshops have included sessions on how to do and present research, with engaging talks from professors and built-in social time.
Student Social Night
We usually plan a casual and welcoming social event—often with games, food, and lots of conversation to help students unwind and connect. From booking the venue to managing catering and promotion, it’s all student-run and community-centered.
Student Research Session
We coordinate this session where student participants can present their research in short, accessible talks to a broad mathematical audience. We handle everything from the call for abstracts and scheduling to moderating and hosting during the event.
AARMS-CMS Poster Session
StudC runs a poster session, where students display their research and speak with judges and attendees. We manage abstract submissions, logistics, and judge coordination.
If you’re attending a CMS Meeting, you can join in on any of these (just be sure to register!).
Why Join?
Studc is a place where you can:
- Grow professionally: gain experience in communication, organization, publishing, outreach, and event coordination.
- Give back: help build a supportive national student community.
- Have fun: work with a friendly team of students who love math and want to make a difference.
Whether you’re into planning, writing, designing, managing, or just making cool things happen—we’d love to hear from you.
