Summer 2026 Meeting Update

The summer meeting was a great success!

This summer, the Student Committee headed east to the University of New Brunswick in Saint John for the CMS Summer Meeting, and students showed up in force. This meeting featured an exceptionally high proportion of student attendees, which meant that all student-focused events—our development workshop, poster session, research sessions, and the social—ran with genuinely enthusiastic participation 😀

To recap: on Friday, students had time after the official meeting start to meet each other, decompress after travel, and play some board games. We would like to offer a post‑hoc apology to anyone caught off guard by our attempts to gather feedback… we appreciate your patience. Fieldwork happens when it happens.

Saturday brought one of the attendees’ favourite events—the poster session! This year we had a lineup of six elegant posters. While each one deserved an award of its own, the following prizes were presented during the CMS banquet:

  • President’s Award — Hin Lon Lao (York University) for “Transversal Matroids and Their Presentations”
  • AARMS Award — Fatima Islam (University of New Brunswick) for “Impact of Dispersal on Total Equilibrium Biomass in Patch‑Structured Logistic Models”
  • StudC Award — Luyao Zhao (University of New Brunswick) for “A Unified Mathematical Study of Four Within‑Host Mycobacterium Tuberculosis Models”

After a very full Sunday—during which many of our members were eager to explore Canada’s oldest incorporated city—student participants were able to attend a workshop by Joy Morris (University of Lethbridge) on how to stand out during the research and teaching job‑hunting process. The workshop was followed by the student research session, featuring talks by Aiden Taylor (University of Calgary), Katrina De Vera (Acadia University), Hin Lon Lao (York University), and Kateryna Tretiakova (University of Ottawa). The discussion ran overtime, and we will take that as a very good sign!

As always, it was a pleasure meeting so many student members of the CMS this summer! We hope to see even more of you at the Winter Meeting in Montreal. Until then, check out the newest edition of Notes from the Margin, released during the Meeting, and keep an eye on the “About Us” page for upcoming open StudC positions.
