The Canadian Mathematical Society Student Committee accepts applications for financial support for student-led mathematical and statistical activities.
Application Process
Submit your application in .pdf format to chair-studc@cms.math.ca with the subject line “Application for Student Activities Support.” A complete application should be concise (maximum 2 pages) and must include the following information (preferably in this order):
- Event Details
- Title and date of the event
- Description of the event, including the expected number of student participants
- Anticipated impact on local and broader mathematics/statistics student communities
- Financial Information
- Detailed budget breakdown
- List of all funding sources (both confirmed and pending)
- Amount requested from StudC, with a brief explanation of how the funds will be used
- Contact Information of the Primary Organizer
- Full name and institutional affiliation
- Email address and phone number
- Mailing address capable of receiving cheques
Funding Tiers
Table below presents the guidelines on the maximum support given to various types of events.
| Event Type | approximate Number of Participants | Maximum Support |
|---|---|---|
| Small community meetup | less than 30 people | $ 250 |
| Campus-wide event | between 30 and 70 people | $ 500 |
| Regional collaborative event | more than 70 people | $ 1000 |
Selection Criteria
Applications will be evaluated based on the clarity and feasibility of the proposed event, the anticipated impact on mathematics and statistics students, and the overall quality of planning demonstrated. Strong proposals present a realistic budget, a well‑justified funding request, and a clear description of how the event supports student engagement in mathematical communities. The committee may also consider geographic and institutional diversity when allocating funds. The merit of the application will be considered relative to the funding support requested.
Pre- and Post-Event Requirements
Successful applicants will be asked to acknowledge CMS StudC support in event materials and, where applicable, include the StudC logo in the conference package or program. After the event, organizers are expected to provide a brief summary and a group photograph for publication on the StudC website.
Important Notes
Since funding is limited, only a small number of applications can be supported each year. Applications are reviewed on an ongoing basis, and all funding decisions are final. Decisions will be communicated to applicants via email.
