Math to Power Her Life
The “Math to Power Her Life” event, held on April 27, 2024, by the University of Ottawa, aimed to inspire girls aged 12 to 15 to pursue mathematics.
It achieved this by showcasing diverse career paths through workshops on topics like algebra, geometry, and statistics. The event successfully engaged approximately 75 participants through hands-on activities and included a special session for parents to learn how to support their children’s academic interests in mathematics. Promoted in low-income and marginalized communities, the event provided free lunch and t-shirts for volunteers, ensuring broad accessibility. Positive feedback and volunteer interest suggest plans for a fourth annual event in 2025. The event was supported by various sponsors, including the Fields Institute and the NSERC Chair for Women in Science and Engineering of Ontario.
