Bird’s Eye Conference 2025
The third annual Bird’s Eye Conference took place between March 1st and 2nd of 2025 at the University of Toronto. This two-day event brought over 80 current and prospective graduate students from the Department of Mathematics to hone their scientific communication skills and obtain a Bird’s Eye View into mathematics research conducted by their peers.
The first day of the conference was kicked off by our plenary speaker, Professor Asif Zaman of the University of Toronto, who demonstrated how to get the most out of a mathematics talk. Then, throughout the bulk of the conference, graduate students from the department delivered 15-minute short talks on their research area. These talks were carefully prepared by both the chairs and the speakers of each session to be accessible for a general mathematics audience and to provide key insights to the techniques, motivations and insights into the speaker’s field of research.
Aside from talks, a panel session with five senior graduate students was held, where the panelists would share their insights on how to survive life as a graduate student. In addition, conference lunch and dinners were held so that participants could mingle amongst their peers.
In conclusion, the third edition of the Bird’s Eye Conference brought together students from different research areas and training to gain insights into each other’s fields, hone their mathematical communication skills and form lasting connections within the department.
